Vocabulary Building

This time it´s Ways of Breaking. Have you ever considered the amount of words in English you can find which describe different ways of breaking or damaging things? Here I´ve selected only some. Have a look!


Activity:

  • Burst into flames.
  • Crack a joke...

There are lots of phrases, idioms, expressions with many of the words presented today.
Find at least five, write a sentence using each of them and post it as a comment underneath.

  2. I forgot some cookies in my handbag and after a whole day inside it, they were terribly CRUMBLED.

    The woman in the hairdresser´s was so nervous that she SMASHED the mirror.

    During the strong windy storm I could hear the branches of some trees SNAPPING OFF.

    A wall in the house we are building is full of CHINKS, and we could notice that some parts are getting wet.

    I will SQUEEZE my daughters before travelling to England.

  3. IDIOM "THAT`S THE WAY COOKIES CRUMBLE"
    MEANING: you cannot control everything that happens to you, you should accept the bad things that happen
    EXAMPLE: My plans for the weekend failed because my car has broken down. Well, that`s the way the cookies crumble!

    MEANING: concentrate on tiny and unimportant details to find a fault with something
    EXAMPLE: They don`t have any serious differences, they are just splitting hairs

    MEANING: make you feel strong love or sympathy
    EXAMPLE: Do not be angry at her. When you hear her story, it will tear at your heartstrings
